A major earthquake occurred 420 km (260 miles) W of Auckland Island, New Zealand
at 7:59 AM MST, Dec 23, 2004 (Dec 24 at 1:59 AM local time in New Zealand). The magnitude
and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available.
No damage is expected.
Felt throughout Tasmania, Australia and felt in Southland, West Coast and other
parts of the South Island, New Zealand.
