There have been some reports of damage in the states of Colima, Michoacan and
Jalisco. The earthquake was felt strongly in Mexico City. This is the largest earthquake
in this general area since a magnitude 8.0 event on October 9, 1995. The 1995 earthquake
killed at least 49 people and caused extensive damage in Colima and Jalisco.
Update:
At least 29 people killed, 300 injured and about 10,000 homeless. Most of the deaths
and damage occurred in the Villa de Alvarez-Colima area. Some deaths and damage occurred
in Jalisco and Michoacan and a few buildings were damaged in Guanajuato and Morelos.
Felt strongly in Mexico City. Felt in central and southwestern Mexico from Nayarit and
San Luis Potosi to Puebla and Tlaxcala. Also felt at Corpus Christi, El Paso and by people
in high-rise buildings at Houston, Texas. Landslides closed a segment of the
Colima-Guadalajara Highway. Power and telephone outages occurred in Mexico City.
A seiche was observed in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana.
