The Historical Seismogram Filming Project was began in 1979 with the objective of preserving seismograms dating from the beginning of the instrumental era in seismology to 1963. Seismograms of significant earthquakes have been systematically collected and preserved by making photographic copies at observatories sites around the world, and have been made available through the World Data Centers.

The historical seismogram archive at WDCs contains seismogram copiesof 16- and 35-mm microfilm.

In the former USSR the historical seismograms have been filmed from nine stations.
